Case #3:     Poor filter bag construction

A large consumer products producer was experiencing constant emissions with a heavily used process baghouse. The company contracted out the bag supply and installation to a single source in return for a 6-month performance guarantee.

The media used had a special coating for the capturing of very fine particulate.

After 3-1/2 months, product is once again appearing in the clean side of the system. The cuff fabric that seals the bag in the baghouse floor (cell plate) was a very porous knit fabric. It basically leaked like a sieve.

The filter bag has failed not because of the fabric used, but because of a poor choice in construction.

The result is that a potential “welcomed” solution is heading towards being a nightmare for the baghouse owner because the supplier refused to deal with the problem.

This situation was complicated by a few cardinal housekeeping rules not observed during the bag change.

Results:

Unscheduled downtime for the baghouse owner to evaluate and remedy the problem.

Costs for the baghouse owner to purchase 420 new bags @ $28.00 each. ($11,760.00) and install them.

The single most valuable benefit from my point of view that I can pass on to you is this:

There are procedures and methods in the fabric making, bag make-up and during the filterbag installation that are simple and have to be adhered to. At this point in time they are immutable. Deviations from rules cost somebody time, effort and money.

My whole life focus is to improve the day-to-day life of each baghouse owner or user and my financial survival depends on it; yet, with all the information I have at hand, some decisions are still difficult to make. My question now becomes “how can an end user deal with so many unknowns and be sure they have made the right choices?

How?

Guarantees and warranties are wonderful, but they are always arguable once a problem occurs on your side of the playing field.

Always ask for a detailed drawing with each order placed. All construction information must be included. This in itself is an interesting experience.

bullet

Ask for a detailed spec of the filter media with the manufacturer's product number not just the bag manufacturer’s numbers. The spec should include all fiber, yarn, and finishing info that is appropriate.

bullet

Ask for any quality control information regarding the media. This not only includes tests performed by the media manufacturer, but also by the bag fabricator.
